So many mulch choices!

It can be a difficult task to choose the ‘right’ mulch to use on your property.  Some of the things you should consider are the color palette of your home itself, what types of plants are in your beds, and what types of trees are nearby.

You can’t really go wrong with your choice of mulch if the color complements your home well.  This is a quick and easy way to come to this decision.   But, there are other factors you may want to consider.  If you are thinking about rock instead of wood mulch, you should double check that your plants are going to be okay with this.  Rock gets much hotter from the sun during the summer and can cause damage to sensitive plants.  Also, if you have a big pear tree hanging over your landscape beds, you may want to restrain yourself from using pine straw or a light rock such as lava rock.  It may be about impossible to get the leaves out without also removing pine straw or lava rock!

Refreshing the wood chip mulch in flower beds offers numerous benefits in addition to beautification:

• Mulch will inhibit the germination of weeds which will decrease the maintenance work needed throughout the year.
• Mulch increases moisture retention and regulates the temperature of the soil. This insulates the roots during both unexpected cold spells and the extremes of a hot, dry summer.
• Wood chip mulch provides nourishment to the soil as it breaks down. We do not recommend the use of woven landscape fabrics.  The soil quality will deteriorate under these fabrics because the organic mulch above it cannot enter the soil.
• Inorganic mulch type substitutes such as stone, gravel or a rubber mulch are not as beneficial to plants as wood chip mulches are because they do not improve the structure or nutrient content of the soil.
• A 2- to 4-inch layer of mulch is needed to insulate the soil effectively and prevent weed growth.
